North & South Bridges 453.2 over Us 60 and 453.5 over the Canadian River

Canadian, Texas

The US 60 bridges over Canadian River project includes the addition of three new bridges for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway's massive double-track project (Los Angeles to Chicago) at Canadian, Texas. Each of the bridges consisted of pier foundations on massive driven h-piling groups. Approximately 45,000 lineal feet of steel piling was driven on this project. Pier footings were designed approximately 12 feet below existing grade, which resulted in each of 15 footings to be excavated, coffered (sheet piling cofferdam), and dewatered. Pier construction occurred predominately during very cold Texas Panhandle winter weather conditions, requiring all massive cast-in-place concrete sections to be insulated and heated for multiple days at a time.
